I have known and liked this song since I was a child — I found it pretty, and carrying a powerful, faithful message, but had never tried to play it myself.
This is “Be Not Afraid,” written from 1972 to 1973 by Robert J. Dufford, S.J. I chose it as the first of a “Candlelight Hymns” project I’m doing where that’s the idea exactly: play favorite hymns of mine by candlelight, trying to make them as live and authentic as possible. You might know this one, but maybe not.
If you live on Earth, particularly as you spend more time here, you’re likely to find yourself at times in situations of fear, self-doubt, uncertainty, or even peril, perhaps as you face major transitions or crossroads — in all their many varieties. Those can include matters of faith.
Such was the case for Bob Dufford, who was nervous and afraid as he was working toward becoming a Jesuit priest, wondering if he was making the right decision. First the chorus, I believe, and then the verses of “Be Not Afraid” came to him, as the song took shape. In the end, Dufford did follow through with his priestly efforts.
Today, with the song now in its 50s, this hymn is widely known, and you may find it sung in times of need and distress to provide comfort. I gave it a shot to see what I could come up with, and here’s the result. Didn’t do anything to it; I added no effects or processing, and it’s just me, a microphone, and my acoustic guitar. As I say, I wanted this to be as live and real as I could get it.
I included the lyrics in the video so it’s easier to follow along. Hope you enjoy it! May it bring you comfort and strength in times of need — or just a little spiritual renewal/ affirmation and peace, should you want that.
